Originally known as Wide Bay, the region was discovered by a European explorer James Cook while sailing past Double Island Point. Consisting of six areas, with Maryborough as the suburb that is situated mostly by the Burnett River. Its discovery paved way during the 1880s after the railway from Maryborough was completed. However, a historical tragedy, Cyclone Oswald, caused property damages, flooding, and tornadoes.
